Old spot, New thoughts

So, sister is back in town and decided to take a few days off from work to hang out with her. Yesterday she wanted to go to the new International Marketplace in Waikiki…not my cup of tea. So I texted a friend that has a weird work schedule to see if he was off and sure enough he was. Talked about where we wanted to go and decided on the west side.

The West Side….has always eluded me. I’ve tried every trick in my book to fish a certain place and it always seems to be random. Which in hindsight is good because it keeps you on your toes. On this particular day though I saw something that I’ve seen in my limited years of fishing. A big bubble, a long leader (10′), and the GT grubs they sell. I’ve always seen them in the fishing aisles and wondered who actually used them. They just seemed to be a bit excessive for the type of fishing I normally do which is from shore/sand. So there I was watching braddah launch his rig from the place we were fishing and surprisingly saw Papio swarm up chasing the bubble and subsequently swallowing the GT grub. I scratched my head as previous notions on what to use unraveled in my head. It was a good feeling though and reminded me why I love fishing. Once you think you have it figured out someone comes along and shatters all your preconceived notions.

The color this particular individual was using was something I lacked sorely in my arsenal which came as a missed blessing. I normally fish certain shores and had become accustomed to using certain colors and never really bought anything else thinking it would everywhere else. Sadly, that was not the case and found myself scratching the bottomĀ  of my fishing bag and asking my buddy if he had any lures in the preferred color. Luckily after Uncle caught his share of Papio we were left to experiment with the honey hole he had graciously shared with us. We ended up landing a couple Papio in the 11″-12″ range but what we learned that day is invaluable. It’s really a trip to see something that makes no sense smash your thought process. I loved it and it was reminder to shut your mouth ,open your eyes, and remember that you don’t know everything. Spitball off each other as much as possible and expand that knowledge.

As for today, it was a planned fishing day with the sister. Headed out at 8:00AM after a nice McD’s breakfast and headed to the north shore. Slow day, lots of stick/trumpent fish, and small Papio’s. The takeaway though is we pretty much had the beach to ourselves for majority of the day. A rarity in the tourist driven economy we’re in on Oahu. Finished the day with nothing other than Jerry’s Pizza.
